"Pocono's Record's Prize-winning Editorial page editor Paula Heeschen, has been transferred back to reporter. Management says its temporary to train reporter Dave Pierce to do the job when Heeschen's on vacation. Heeschen, a veteran of more than 20 years, is outspoken in her views about the wholesale dumbing down of the paper under Executive editor Bill Watson and conservative publisher Jim Maxwell. perhaps. Her
editorials are generally liberal, so there is staff concern that Watson is easing her out, or down. Editorial staff has been slashed under Maxwell, both copy desk and reporter slots gone and additional assignment piled on editors. Part of circulation the function has been farmed out to a firm in Manila, Philippines. The paper is now owned by ultra conservative Australian Rupert Murdoch, who has vowed
to sell it soon."

ReplyDeleteMaybe all the resort owners will get together. But then, there's still the problem that nobody wants to read that paper.
The Lynetts and their TT rag will expand eastward. Mark my words. They love gobbling up crappy newspapers and making them even worse. All they want is advertising rate dominance. They care about the size of the area, not the product. The Pocono Record will give them Monroe and Pike counties, two growing areas. They'll extend their holdings from the Delaware to the Susquehanna (about the same radius as Chris Kelly's head). In fact, I believe the Lynetts were spotted touring the Pocono Record facilities very recently.
ReplyDeleteIt's not likely that the Ottaway papers will be piece mealed off. The paper would pretty much cease to be profitable if it was removed from it's corporate structure, and I doubt that the Lynetts have the cash to buy the whole chain. Scuttlebutt is that there is a very short list of corporations which are interested in buying the entire chain.
ReplyDeleteIf TT does get the record, it gives them a chance to do what the Newark Star-Ledger does in NJ- Dominate across a portion of the state. The Record would be their 5th paper, and allow them to go on a single masthead, and have regional inserts, containing enough local info to keep them hooked, while keeping the other 75% of content & advertising to be consistant throughout the whole NEPA area. Plus, given the screwy layout of political districts, there is also cross-over between local areas. But, they would have to hire some top-notch talent to deliver some well-written articles that the Star-Ledger & The Philadelphia Inquirer are famous for. Considering when the Inquirer was taken over locally, a lot of the writers/reporters were turned into contractors. Maybe they can provide some of the features. The purchase of the Pocono Record give the Lynetts a chance to become a real paper, but do they have the balls to take the chance & try to become a real power, or just be content to enjoy the cash flow of the small rags....
